ANZAPPL (VIC) Twilight Soiree: The Role of Psychology in Facilitating Torture

The Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law (Victoria) invites all to the second 2016 Twilight Soiree on The Role of Psychology in Facilitating Torture: Mistakes, Missteps, and Corrections by Prof Barry Rosenfeld.

Barry Rosenfeld is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Psychology and an Adjunct Professor of Law at Fordham University. He is also co-director of the Forensic specialization in the Clinical Psychology doctoral program. Dr. Rosenfeld received his doctoral in Clinical Psychology from the University of Virginia, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in bio-ethics and consultation-liaison psychology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center before working for several years as Senior Psychologist for the New York City Forensic Psychiatry Clinic (a division of Bellevue Hospital). He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Forensic Mental Health and President-Elect of the International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of several prominent psychology journals, including Law and Human Behavior, Psychological Assessment, and Assessment.
Dr. Rosenfeld has published widely on a range of topics related to forensic assessment including malingering, competence to stand trial, violence risk assessment, and cross-cultural issues in forensic psychology. He has also conducted and published multiple research studies related to torture and the mental health of refugees and asylum seekers. He has served as a consultant for Physicians for Human Rights, the Bellevue Hospital Program for Survivors of Torture, the U.S. Commission on Religious Freedom, and the Law School Admission Council, among others. Dr. Rosenfeld is board certified in forensic psychology and maintains an active practice in forensic consultation.
Dr. Rosenfeld has evaluated multiple individuals detained in the infamous Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay military prisons, consulted to a U.N. War Tribunal regarding the prosecution of Serbian individuals accused of war crimes, and evaluated litigants in a class action lawsuit against the government of India. He has testified in many high profile cases, including U.S. v. Osama Bin Laden (involving alleged Al Qaeda members convicted of blowing up the U.S. Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya).
