Perils and Portents of Unfitness to Stand Trial: International and Comparative Perspectives

October 9, 2017 - October 10, 2017

The Centre for Non-Adversarial Justice and the New Zealand Branch of ANZAPPL invite you

to this special two day event examining issues around  unfitness to stand trial .

To be held in Auckland’s  AUT University

Chair: Professor Warren Brookbanks, AUT University

The conference aims to foster an inter-disciplinary and collegial environment in which to discuss and debate a range of theoretical and practical concerns which the issue of unfitness to stand trial may give rise to.

Unfitness to stand trial has become a significant and commonly litigated  trial issue in many common law jurisdictions and involves troubling  questions of policy, culture and legislation. The conference will benefit from the wisdom and insights of leading international scholars and clinicians familiar with the range of issues around unfitness to plead, through the presentation of keynote addresses and panel discussions.

Participants include Professors Richard Bonnie, Ronnie Mackay, Gerry Ferguson, Warren Brookbanks and Ian Freckleton

and clincians Dr Hinemoa Elder, Dr Susanna Every-Palmer, Dr Jeremy Skipworth and Mr Nigel Fairley.

Further announcements will identify additional speakers, formalities regarding officially opening and closing the event, and additional panel discussion members.
