Asylum Seeker Mental Health: Australia’s Failure of Decency
September 9, 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Australia’s attitude to asylum seekers is characterised by the triumph of fear and greed over empathy and concern. Dr Jureidini will talk about the damaging effects of current and past policy on the mental health of asylum seekers, those who care for and guard them, and society as a whole. He welcomes the opportunity to discuss the various roles of psychologists, psychiatrists and lawyers in this process, including the assessment, treatment and representation of asylum seekers.
Jon Jureidini is a child psychiatrist who also trained in philosophy and psychotherapy. He learnt most of what he knows about psychiatry by growing up in a pub, having 3 daughters, and from novels and Leunig cartoons. He leads the Critical and Ethical Mental Health research group at the University of Adelaide, and chairs Australian-Palestinian Partnerships for Education and Health. He has been a strong critic of Australia’s reckless immigration detention policies and has worked with asylum seekers for over a decade. Since he first visited Woomera IRDC, he has seen over 50 adults and children, as well as given evidence to both Human Rights enquiries into children in custody.
All tickets include the cost of the presentation and a two course dinner. A cash bar is also available on site.
